The Knoll Studio Tulip Chair is a classic design by Eero Saarinen. The mess of table legs and chairs that appear in most interiors was a thorn in Saarinen's side. With the Tulip chair from 1957 he attempted to make a chair consist of one flowing whole again. His idea to form the entire chair from fiberglass unfortunately turned out not to be feasible and was therefore ultimately made of two parts: a seat made of cast fiberglass reinforced with a layer of plastic and a base of cast aluminum with a Rilsan coating. Nevertheless, the chair appears to consist of one whole, which is reminiscent of a tulip leaf thanks to its undulating shapes. An additional advantage of the two separate parts is the flexibility, which makes the chair fully rotatable. Together with the armchairs and tables, also known as the 'Pedestal Collection', the chair is an example of modernism from the fifties. On the bottom of the base you will find the Knoll logo and Eero Saarinen's signature as proof of authenticity.
The Tulip chair is 49 centimeters wide, 81 centimeters high and 53 centimeters deep. The seat height is 47 centimeters. The Tulip Chair was first published in 1957 by the American Knoll Studio, which still has the chair in its collection today. With architect Eliel Saarinen and textile designer Loja Saarinen as parents, Eero was born into a creative designer nest. He worked at the Cranbrook Campus, where he met Charles Eames. A friendship developed that led to many experiments with materials. Cranbrook is also where he met Florence Knoll, who asked him to design for the company in the 1940s. In addition to the iconic Pedestal series, the Womb Chair was also created here.
