Flexform Torii – sculptural seating with Japanese elegance
The Torii collection by Flexform, designed by the Japanese design studio Nendo, is a poetic fusion of minimalism, craftsmanship, and architectural precision. The design appears airy and understated, yet reveals an exceptional level of detail and refinement upon closer inspection.
Characteristic features include rounded shapes, slim profiles, and a seeming simplicity that is actually the result of highly thoughtful design. The metal leg structure subtly references the torii – the traditional entrance gates to Shinto shrines in Japan. Horizontal and vertical elements interlock elegantly, creating a sophisticated visual lightness that contrasts beautifully with the richly upholstered volume.
The Torii family includes a wide range of elements: linear sofas with high or low backrests, angled sofas with different seat depths, armchairs, lounge and dining chairs, ottomans, coffee tables, and a slim oval console table. Thanks to this modular offering, the individual elements can be freely combined into a harmonious and powerful overall composition.
The slim backrests are finished with vertical stitching and a refined piping, which further emphasizes the artisanal character. The piping is available in eco-leather or eco-nubuck, with a subtly contrasting shade for fabric combinations, or tone-on-tone for leather versions. All upholstered parts are fully customizable: fabric, leather, or fabric combined with a leather base.
The metal frame evokes the image of the Senbon Torii – the iconic colonnade of a thousand crimson gates – and the detailing of the legs is reminiscent of the traditional Kigumi technique, where wooden joints are applied without nails or screws. Optionally, chairs can be expanded with a leather magazine holder, crafted using techniques from the luxury leather goods industry.
